Description

For :iconcirque-des-reves:
I hope this app is good enough because unfortunately I can't draw very well at the moment. It's very sad, what's in my head just isn't coming out on paper or on screen. Why must hands and feet be so awkward?

N a m e :
Magpie
A g e : 17
B i r t h d a y : October 31st
S p e c i e s : Human
F a c t i o n : White
J o b : Silk Aerialist

P e r s o n a l i t y :

        [ distrustful ]     [ rude ]     [ quick learner ]     [ reliable ]
She’s suspicious of kind acts and wary of trusting in others.
Magpie's rather distrustful of others due to her life on the streets. There weren't many people she could rely on when she was younger; the few she did, left, either dying or disappearing, leaving her with no one to trust. Everyone else was just out to take advantage of her to ensure their own survival. She would like to have real friendships but is afraid of getting close to people, believing they will just leave her and hurt her again. Because of her fear, she tends to be a little rude and speaks bluntly to people to put them off talking to her. She’s also taken to being cold and quiet to avoid attention in the first place.
Magpie has a desire to learn but is easily put off by failure.
She will listen, ask questions and observe what others do carefully but she won’t practice in front of people if she can help it. She’s hard-working but if others see her fail at something she’ll become reluctant to try again. She hates people seeing her fail, partially because she can’t help but see failure as a sign of weakness that people will mock or take advantage off.
Despite all her personality flaws though, Magpie is a person you can rely on.
She may not trust others or want them near her, but if she has to do something for someone else, you can count on her to do it. She knows what it feels like to be let down by someone and would rather not be the cause of someone else’s hurt. She tries not to make them often but if she makes a promise, she will do everything she can to keep it.

H i s t o r y :

TL;DR
-    She lived on the streets with her brother but when she was twelve he disappeared. She survived by herself for a while but didn’t give up on the chance of seeing him again. When she was seventeen, the circus came to town and took the opportunity to pickpocket the crowds. While there, she saw someone who looked a little but like her brother and also became awed by the white faction’s performances. She decided to join the circus and while not having much skill, she made enough of an impression to be allowed join and has been training hard since.

Magpie was born into a very poor and troubled household. The youngest of five, she doesn’t remember much about her early years. Her brother, Aiden, told her of their other siblings who died of illness before Magpie was two. He also told her of how their mother was a whore and an alcoholic who drank away her life. She died when Magpie was four and it was around that time when she and Aiden left home.
Aiden was seven years older than she was and had been the one to take care of Magpie. He was albino and because of that their father always thought that Aiden wasn’t his kid. He took advantage of his wife’s death as a chance to kick Aiden out of the house, but Aiden took Magpie with him when he left because he didn’t think Magpie would survive without him.
Life was hard on the streets as she was so young and the other street kids thought Aiden was a demon because of his appearance. About two years after leaving home, Aiden’s health took a turn for the worse. Magpie quickly learned the tricks of the trade, begging and pickpocketing, in order to make up for her brother and help take care of him, but it was difficult. She was small and frequently picked on by others. If they had had a bad day, they would come to plunder her earnings. Sometimes they would befriend her, convince her to do a difficult job and then take everything, leaving her having risked her life for nothing.
But she kept going and, despite the hardships, she was happy because she had her brother.
Things changed though when she was twelve. Aiden picked up jobs every now and again that would sometimes mean he left for a few days at a time. Magpie never knew what the jobs were, though had asked many times. It happened that Aiden went off to do a job and never came back. Magpie waited, and waited, and searched for him all over the city, but she couldn’t find out what had happened. She started to get angry, not knowing if he was dead or alive. Questions started bothering her: if he was alive, had something serious happened or had he just finally decided to leave her?
It was at this point that Magpie decided to forsake her old name because she wanted to forget about her past. Some of the other kids had taken to calling her Magpie because she was often surrounded by birds and being a pickpocket attracted to shiny things, Magpie seemed an appropriate name. Having to survive on her own now, Magpie worked to create a new image for herself, she wanted to be someone strong, someone with no weakness, someone who didn’t need others.
Without her brother, life was even lonelier than it had been before. She took to spending long amounts of time away from others, but she kept going. She became determined to survive, if only just to prove her brother wrong. When she could, she searched for him among large crowds, hoping that she might find him.
So life went on. It happened that, around her seventeenth birthday, a circus was coming to town. Circuses meant crowds for pickpocketing which meant easy money. The evening had started out well and she had pickpocketed enough money to get her by for a while. She was about to leave but saw an easy target and decided to do one last job but things went wrong. As she was reaching into a man’s coat pocket, she thought she saw someone who somewhat resembled her brother in the crowd ahead of her which made her flinch, attracting the man’s attention. The man tried to grab her arm to stop her from running away but she evaded capture and ran away. She made for a nearby tent to hide out among the audience in and happened to come across the white faction’s tent where she was awed by the aerial performances.
When she felt it was safe enough, she left the tent to search for the man who had looked like her brother but she couldn’t find him. She was about to leave the circus but something stopped her. She couldn’t get the images of those aerial performers out of her head. Before she knew it, she was rushing back, having made a spur of the moment decision to join the circus. Eventually she found someone in charge and asked to join.
She set her sights on the white faction and their aerial performers. She didn’t have any particular talent other than her ability to climb, but what she lacked in skill she made up for with her love of heights and her quick learning. Something must have made an impression because she was allowed to join and has been training in the circus since.
She was proving Aiden wrong. She could survive without him.

L i k e s :

Heights: Magpie really likes heights, a good thing seeing as she’s an aerial acrobat. She feels much more comfortable being above others. When she walks into a room, often she will try to find the tallest point and hope she can sit there and if you’re looking for her, she can often be found on roofs. She has no fear of heights whatsoever and has no problems working without safety nets and wires.
Climbing: She's gotten quite good at climbing over the years in order to get to the high spots and as she's very good at running, climbing is often how she escaped chases.
Night: She’s a night owl. She loves the peace and tranquillity of watching the sunset from the roof and staying there all night under the stars.
Snow: In Magpie's eyes, there's something incredibly beautiful about snow. Winter could be a hard time for a street kid but nevertheless, she enjoys watching the snow blanket the roofs. Snow can make even a dirty city seem clean.
Birds: Magpie has found that if she sits somewhere long enough out in the open, birds start to come to her. She had a particular fondness for magpies. She thinks they’re beautiful and admires their attitude. Sometimes, she wishes to could transform into a bird and just fly away from everything the troubles her.

D i s l i k e s :

People touching her: Normally, Magpie is good at keeping her composure and pretending that nothing bothers her, but all bets are off it you try to touch her. Don’t even bother with a handshake, and if you try touch her hair, you might just lose that hand. Also, if you want to see Magpie lose all composure and freak out, try hug her. Watch her squirm to get out of that embrace.
Mess: She can’t abide messy things and messy people. She likes to be neat and tidy so she knows where everything is and can tell that nothing has been stolen.
Loudness: She hates loud people and loud situations. The hustle and bustle of the day bothers her which is why she likes the night so much.
Thunder and lightning: She won’t admit it, but she’s terrified of thunder and lightning.
Colours: She doesn't like wearing colourful things. White, black and grey are her colours, and she usually only wears white as part of her costumes for performing.
Her flat chest: She's slightly sensitive about her lack of womanly features and somewhat childlike body.

F a m i l y :

Mother - deceased
Father - unknown, presumably still alive and living somewhere in Dublin
Colm, Niamh and Mary (siblings) - deceased
Aiden (brother) - missing, possibly dead

R e l a t i o n s h i p s :

None yet. Please be her friend!

M I S C/O t h e r  I n f o r m a t i o n:

  -  Her real name is Caoimhe
but she'll never tell you that.
  -  Magpie can speak a little bit of Irish. One of the older street kids taught her.
  -  When she lived on the streets, she usually pretended to be a boy for safety and as much as her flat chest bothers her, it made that a lot easier.
  -  She understands the likelihood of her brother being dead but she still hasn't forgiven him for leaving her and she can't help but look for him in large crowds, hoping that he'll show up someday. One of the reasons why she stuck with the circus is because she hopes traveling and seeing so many people will increase her chances of finding him.
  -  If her brother ever does show up, she plans to punch him in the face.
